Wedding Cakes of Today
The wedding cake has certainly come a long way. From the early grains that were tossed at the bride to the unique and fantastic creations we see today. There are the traditional and nontraditional cakes and those with and without a theme.
When you look at old wedding photos, pictures of the cake are all relatively similar. Two to three tiers of white layer cake iced with white or cream colored icing. The layers can be baked in many different shapes; the most traditional being the round and square, and there's also hexagon, heart or oval. They can be assembled with each layer being placed on top of the other or using columns which extends the height of the cake and tends to transform it into a more formal piece.
The icing most often used is still the soft spreadable buttercream icing. But it's no longer only done in white or cream color. often tinted to match the colors you've chosen for your wedding. Another popular icing is fondant. This is rolled out like dough and laid over the cake to achieve a perfectly smooth finish. This look could never be accomplished by using regular icing.
The decorations of the cake is where your imagination can go wild. Once you've decided on all the basics, the flavor of the cake, the type of filling, the type and flavor of icing, how you want it to look is the final decision and there are infinite It can be decorated to match your designer wedding gown. It can have a theme for the season in which you're getting married. Fresh flowers to match those in the bride's bouquet are often used. The bride and groom's favorite hobby, such as a lovely winter scene with two skiers in wedding garb on the top of the cake would be whimsical and fun.
